XAVIER UNIVERSITY

Smart Access for a World-Class Medical Campus in Aruba

The Project

Xavier University School of Medicine (XUSOM) and its School of Veterinary Medicine (XUSOVM) represent a cornerstone of high-level international education in the Caribbean. Located in Oranjestad, Aruba, the university has recently undergone a monumental transformation, centered around a $70 million investment in a state-of-the-art residential campus. This expansion is not merely about physical space; it is a visionary leap toward creating a “Smart Campus” that integrates cutting-edge technology with the highest standards of student living and academic excellence.

The new campus serves as a centralized hub for a global community of future medical and veterinary professionals. Spanning over several acres, the development includes high-end residential suites, advanced research laboratories, simulation centers, and expansive common areas designed to foster collaboration. Because the campus functions as a 24/7 living and learning environment, the infrastructure required an access control solution that could bridge the gap between hospitality-style residential comfort and the rigorous security protocols of a medical institution.

By selecting Luckey by Sofia part of ISEO, Xavier University has implemented a digital-first security strategy that aligns with its prestige. The project currently encompasses 520 smart locks across the primary residential and academic blocks, providing a seamless “Keyless Experience” that reflects the university’s commitment to innovation and student well-being.

Our Solution

Xavier University chose Luckey by Sofia (part of ISEO), a cloud-native access control platform that provides centralized management with localized reliability. The deployment features 520 smart locks integrated into a unified digital ecosystem. Managing a modern medical campus involves balancing two competing needs: the frictionless mobility required by students and the rigorous security required for sensitive academic and clinical facilities. The university faced several key challenge:

  • Climate Resilience: The Caribbean environment (salt air and high humidity) demands hardware with exceptional durability.
  • Scalability: The infrastructure needed to support an immediate large-scale deployment while providing a roadmap for a future ecosystem of up to 20,000 users.
  • Credential Diversity: The solution had to accommodate different user preferences, from tech-savvy medical students to administrative personnel and maintenance teams.

Main Features

  • Smartphone Mobile Keys: Students use the Luckey app to access residential suites and study halls, turning their personal devices into secure digital keys.
  • RFID Smart Cards: Providing a reliable, high-speed backup for common areas and administrative zones.
  • ISEO F9000 Mechatronic Keys: For the most sensitive areas, such as research labs and technical rooms, the university deployed the F9000 system. These keys offer the security of electronics with the physical robustness of a traditional key—and since the battery is in the key, not the lock, they are virtually maintenance-free in the humid Aruba climate.
